Today it's raining, so it is the best time to get up and update the blog. I received some mails asking to write about our everyday life, what we do, how we do in what a normal day is. You also comment me the problems you have to make a comment, I think you have to put a login name or your gmail account, I do not know, my father hasn’t gmail account and he did put a comment. You must be identified in some way, not just the commentary I guess.
So ...
Well, since then we moved from the hostel where we were. If some come to Cochabamba and we are not here we will recommend this hostel, nice people and clean rooms. Herena was right, much cleaner and cheaper than Morocco. Here's a hostel can cost around 2.5 - 4.5 € per person per night, bearing in mind that Cochabamba it is a bit more expensive than Santa Cruz. The first days we arrived in Cochabamba we stayed at this hostel, in total about ten days.
To eat the solution is quite simple: in "restaurants." The restaurant concept here varies widely. It’s better not to look down the street sites that won’t give you confidence for their cleanliness. So far we have eaten chicken with rice, potatoes and fried bananas. We haven’t been sick (yet) because we have avoided eating in the street, where there are thousands of "mamitas” (Bolivian women) frying all kinds of meat: guts, hamburgers, chicken,... For little pockets is not bad for a while the diet of chicken, you can easily eat a menu with one leg, potatoes, rice and bananas for 1.5 €. We have found better sites, a little more "expensive" for € 1.8 -2 where a menu comes with vegetables, pasta, various meat, salad, ... Our friends have shown us these places , thank goodness. They also have rich chicken broth for 70 cents but you finish a little tired anyway. It's good to know where you can eat salads and vegetables, because this water is not potable by any of the cities except La Paz. So you must be sure they boil the water for washing food.
The director of the Foundation where Dani is going to work, has helped us a lot with the question of the flat. We are waiting to see if we rent the upstairs of his house, which is empty. Belongs to a community of Jewish, and the rabbis have to agree all. At the moment we are definitely not bad. We have moved to a house of a Bolivian family of a boy who works in the mARTadero who rent rooms. It is rather curious, almost the whole family: 3 sisters and 2 brothers (I think there are any more but they are not here) are working together in the office of the company that leads the foundation where Dani is going to work. They are architects or designers or cooks or whatever. So we're staying at home where we have not only room but every meal for € 1.25, and that's great! Vegetables, soup, wonders!. Franz is the guy who works in the mARTadero and makes rich dishes and also a nice fellow. In the room the two of us pay € 4.375 per day. There are also staying an Austrian and a German, and George the parrot because the house has a courtyard garden that looks like a "jungle." Here the houses are incredible, half falling, dusty streets, and when you enter, a cross aisle, and you come across some amazing gardens and courtyards, quiet, no noise. It is a total calm. The house is quite lifely, where conversations are shared endless discussions and, of course, politics.
This house is a bit far from the work of Esther but she arrives in about 15 minutes. It could take a "micro" (bus) or "trufi" (fixed-route taxi) but it is better to walk. Let's see if I make a picture of a micro, they are really "exotic". The trufis are normal cars can hold up to 9 people, but following a route and cost the same as the buses: 0,18 €. There's no stopping or micros or trufis, you know where to go and stop when you see it and ready (to drop the same). When you say "Hello", "Good afternoon," nobody responds, we do not yet know why because in general people are friendly. They say that in the Altiplano (La Paz, Oruro, Potosi) is even worse, people are naturally not friendly. If you're going to get a taxi we were advised not to take the tinted glass ones, or that no one inside, then you decide a price before taking it and go.
Water taxis, food ... there are several things to take into account for security. Something that you have to get used to is noise. The cars beep to call your attention to a crossing pass for anything. When we arrived we were looking everywhere thinking they were calling us or something, still it’s quite difficult to know if they just warn you or they are calling you.
The sound is hard to transmit in writing, coupled with the smells. It smells absolutely different, and I am not referring only to disgusting, but different. The streets, filled with food stalls, expel gas: meat, potatoes, burgers, fruit ... The drains are usually stuck and garbage cans full. The cars have no catalytic so that the smoke and smell of gas is constant. At mid-afternoon, when restaurants throw the leftovers of food and the heat is more pronounced, it is better not to move to the side of the cubes. The buckets are large, those who are down a lever to open. Even we are afraid to open them, it seems as if there was a flock of mosquitoes waiting to eat you.
I just saw a hummingbird. I had never seen one.
Esther is now two weeks into his job and now the roles are not fully defined, but she has an idea of what is by now, Monday through Friday from 8:30 am-12 pm working on the legal - psychological, that is, take care for women who have suffered or are suffering from any physical or psychological (aspects that are directed) or are going through a divorce, children recognition by the father, family care are not being met ... and on Friday afternoon with a self-help group of women who have been or are still battered. This Tuesday afternoon is about to start working on a host of girls from 13 to 18 years who have been raped and who also need therapy.
I (Dani) still have not started on site this week but I have been reading and trying to understand the functions, mission, vision of the foundation, it will be very useful from now on. The director, Fernando, returns Sunday, and next week we will concentrate more in what to do. In addition on Monday should tell us if we can rent the upstairs of his house...
Christophe, you asked by the Internet. Before, we had wifi in the hostel, still did not know how, but we had. Now there is not in the house but as mARTadero is three blocks far, and there is wifi, I have the connection easily. If not, after store fried chicken, there are a large internet café’s (without coffee). The connection is about 0.375 € per hour divided into slots of 20 minutes. The downside is that the connection is very slow, very slow. I think today what you'll find anywhere in the world is an internet cafe.
Cochabamba has a fairly broad range of cultural activities. In addition we are well informed and that through the work of Dani we learn everything, so we have employed the evening ... Yesterday for example we went to see a concert of flamenco boliviano (Camaron is still turning in his grave) but the cultural center Simon I. Patiño, a lounge of the nineteenth century, with sculptures of goddesses and marble everywhere, which made it funny. There are plenty of pubs, concert halls, theaters, ... and many exhibitions to see, cinema social, religious, Spanish, with much debate, here everything is discussed and shared, as in any European hub. This weekend, of course, a film series for Women's Day. We haven’t got out so much, we used to be at home at 12. It's better to know if you come back with someone or take a taxi, although the city seems pretty safe for the South American royalty. Last Friday we were in a Friday Coa, who is the first Friday of the month it is offering to Pachamama, drink Chicha (fermented corn liquor) and burnt offerings to Mother Earth while chewing coca. Franz laughs because he says that is for "gringos" (gringo here is a foreigner) and the truth is right. As with anywhere the search for authenticity is a maximum, and people know how to take advantage of it. Yet we were curious to see it. This friday people are burning the COAS (offerings to the Pachamama) at its premises for coffins’ shops, so that there is good business.
Another thing that draws much attention is the amount of dogs. Usually 3 to 5 together, but most of the time they go to sleep. Esther said they are dead because of hunger, and it is quite probable, but it hit on every corner to see a dog lying in the shade. Sometimes I think that at any time can attack you and lose their head, as Anouk had told me, and we really hope that this does not happen. They seem to be dead, lying there, without hope.
Well, I think you have a better idea of our everyday lives, anyway through your questions, we can send out what we see and live here so do not hesitate to ask anything, even if it seems obvious a priori.
I would talk a little bit more about the subject par excellence here in: politics, but I think that deserves a little more time to go well there.
